The Art and Business of Sampling: Graham Marsh x Cee Lo Green

August 3, 2012 · Alex Medina

This is a great video. As a producer I share many of the same sentaments Cee Lo has towards sampling. To recreate/reinterpret/repurpose something that’s already created is an exciting and beautiful process. For Gravity I and the rest of The Watchmen worked on a track that’s composed entirely of a sample. The sample is so integral to the track and we were uncertain that it was not going to get cleared but it did! When seeking clearance you are really at the mercy of the owner of the sample. They can grab whatever percentage they desire and also charge what they would like upfront. I know of a situation where the owner of the original composition wanted 80% of publishing for track. It is important that you don’t release and sell material that you have not cleared. You will get hit hard.
